About Pegeia
Perched high on craggy cliffts, Peyia Village overlooks the most spectacular and photogenic stretch of coastline in Cyprus. The village itself boasts a wide choice of bars, traditional tavernas and restaurants, and has excellent amenities including schools, medical facilities, banks, local shops, fitness centre, hairdressers and even its own football stadium, veterinary practice and cattery!
The village is very close to the world famous Akamas Peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty with deep gorges, wild landscapes and wide sandy bays. It is home to 530 plant species and an equally impressive variety of fauna - 168 birds, 12 mammals, 20 reptiles and 16 butterfly species. Lara Bay is an important turtle-breeding site and is home to two andangered turtle species - green turtle and hawks-bill turtle.
Close by to Poyia is Coral Bay which, in addition to its many tavernas, restaurants and shops, also has one of the best beaches in south-west Cyprus. Coral Bay will also soon be the venue of a brand new, prestigious marina which will make the area even more the coveted place to be than it already is.
Further afield, the city of Paphos is approximatelly 15 to 20 minutes drive away and is a fascinating mix of old and new cultures. A walk in the "old town" is a fascinating pastime and it is like going back in time when watching the local artisans at work. But, if you are looking for shops, paphos has an enormous variety of outlets ranging from high fashion to stylish furniture, art to cars. There are several large supermarkets in the city offering a huge choice of local and imported products as well as locally grown fruit and vegetables, meat and fish.
There are many places of historical interest in Peyia. There are remains of Roman tombs carved into the cliffs above the sea and there are two ruined Christian basilicas on the outskirts of the village that still have their original mosaic floor.
Finally, if you want to do something different, you can go paragliding or go-karting are you can a tip from the locals, and just enjoy snoozing in the sun!
